Transfiguration has a tradition during lent that each confirmation student is paired with an adult from the congregation. Wednesday nights during Lent, confirmands and their mentors sit together for the Oasis service, engage in guided conversation (based on the confirmation large group presentation) and experience closing prayer together with the rest of the mentors/mentees. We ask that mentors commit to these three elements of the mentorship experience (worship, conversation and prayer together) from 6:15 – 8:00 PM each of these Wednesday nights in Lent:
• February 21 | Lent 2 – The world was created in 7 days?! Questions of faith & science
• February 28 | Lent 3 – Is God involved in our daily lives?
• March 7 | Lent 4 – Does Jesus save only those who believe? What is belief?
• March 14 | Lent 5 – Does God love winners more than losers?
• March 21 | Lent 6 – Does God hear us when we pray?
As well, we recommend that you join us Wednesday night February 7th for the Lenten Mentor Orientation from 7:15-8:00 in the Adult Ed. Room downstairs. Please submit the Mentor Registration form (below) and the Background Check form (below). We will have notaries on hand at the orientation, on Sundays February 4th and 11th and Wednesdays, February 7th and 14th. Mentors must have their complete registration form and background check submitted to Ben by February 14th.
*An important note: We strongly encourage you to mentor a child who is not your own. The experience of building a relationship with a caring adult who is not their parent is central to what makes this experience impactful. By all means, “trade kids” with another family, or seek out a family whose confirmand needs a mentor. Special requests will be considered, but we urge you to embrace this element of the experience.
Your presence with these children in this special way is a service not only to your confirmand, not only to Transfiguration, but to the Church – the Body of Christ, this communion of saints. And God willing, this experience will be a blessing to you and your life of faith.
